Kia KV7 concept showcases future vision for the van segment

Kia Motors’ design-led transformation has delivered eye-catching vehicles such as the Soul, Forte Koup, Sorento and Sportage that bear strong resemblances to the concept cars that preceded them and today at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, the brand’s U.S. design studio unveiled its latest design statement – the “KV7” concept. Conceived as a modern-day “activity van,” the KV7 concept challenges the notion that vans are strictly for family transportation and reveals a vision for a vehicle with the functionality to transport a large number of people and their belongings while also serving as a connected social hub for groups of friends and adventure-seekers.

The KV7 concept’s design stands in sharp contrast to the dramatically raked windshields and wedge-shaped noses found throughout the van segment, and builds on the philosophy of “embracing the box” established by Kia’s funky Soul urban passenger vehicle to create a unique and alluring design language that brings SUV-like qualities to the segment.

“From the outset, we felt the category was in need of an honest reassessment due to the fact that everyone seems so desperate to attach the word ‘sporty’ to their minivan, even though vans, at their very core are simply a box,” said Tom Kearns, Chief Designer, Kia Motors America. “Rather than reject the box we chose to celebrate it, just like we did with the Soul, and the result is a straightforward yet sophisticated vehicle that retains the functionality vans are known for and meets the changing and diverse needs of today’s consumers.”

Modern, Confident Exterior

Kia Motors’ design-led transformation has infused emotion and passion into the brand’s lineup of new and recently introduced vehicles; inspiration for the KV7 concept was found in the simplicity of elegant box shapes such as sleek smart phones and classic pieces of luggage. The KV7’s wide stance is paired with an A-pillar and windshield design that is less vertical than traditional minivans; its smooth exterior skin and 20-inch wheels exude a modern appearance while projecting the confidence and strength of an SUV.

The KV7 concept’s most striking feature is its passenger-side gullwing door, which creates a massive point-of-entry to the lounge-like interior when opened in conjunction with the pillar-less front passenger door.

The KV7 concept’s inviting face is highlighted by an interpretation of Kia’s signature bold tabbed grille with vertical LED headlamps integrated within the design to create a clean, smooth look. The KV7 features several LED lighting elements that Kia’s design team is evaluating for future production vehicles, including a continuous line of LED fog lights that span the entire front end of the vehicle and directional turn indicators on the outside mirrors and the rear of the vehicle that pulse in the direction being signaled.

The KV7 concept’s distinctive windshield follows the unique designs found on the new Sportage CUV and Optima midsize sedan. A series of near-continuous windows starting at the A-pillar provide uninterrupted views for a day at the beach or a night out on the town. Despite its non-traditional look, the KV7’s length (191.85 in.), width (80.0 in.) and wheelbase (122.0 in.) are consistent with the van segment allowing for flexible seating configurations and a multitude of storage options.

Open, Relaxed Interior

In the process of rethinking what a van’s exterior appearance and image could be, Kia’s Southern California design team also envisioned an interior to meet the needs of an entirely new group of consumers – a group of people referred to as “Ringleaders.” Rather than using a van to transport children and their accompaniments, Ringleaders are busy organizing road trips, social outings and new adventures for themselves and their friends to experience together. As such, the KV7 concept’s interior employs four custom-built swiveling seats, including the driver’s seat, and a rear-corner mini-lounge with seating for three and integrated storage compartments to promote interaction in an open social environment.

The simple yet sophisticated theme is brought to life inside the KV7 concept through its modern color palette featuring soft beige and green tones and the use of unique seat and surface materials. The KV7 utilizes a variety of unconventional textures, including reclaimed teak wood flooring and sustainable wool and felt materials help to foster a warm and inviting atmosphere.

When the KV7 concept’s push button start is engaged, the entire front dash moves more than six inches toward the driver, bringing all controls within easy reach, including the large multi-use display which integrates infotainment, climate and navigation systems in one simple-to-use interface controlled by a trackball mouse mounted in the dash. Rear passengers have their own, separate interface in the form of a floating tabletop touch-screen computer display. The KV7 is Wi-Fi enabled, providing both the front and rear displays with Internet capabilities and the ability for multiple passengers to connect their smart phones to the vehicle at one time and sign on to social networking sites.

Building on the experimental use of LED lighting elements found on the exterior, the KV7’s concept’s interior also features multiple flush-to-the-floor accent illumination points and standout green LED lighting throughout the front dash, instrument panel and rear display area to compliment the vehicle’s color palette.
The final element that separates the KV7 concept from the rest of the minivan crowd can be found under the hood – the concept is powered by Kia’s new Theta II 2.0-liter GDI turbocharged engine which is capable of delivering up to 285 horsepower, and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission to deliver V6-type power and performance while achieving better than 30 miles per gallon on the highway*.

Kia Motors focuses on style and technology at Paris Show

(SEOUL) September 23, 2010 – Kia’s 2010 Paris Motor Show stand will major on striking design and new technologies. Taking centre stage and making its world premiere will be the eye-catching, compact and unique electric POP concept, designed by Kia’s European design team under the direction of Peter Schreyer, Kia’s Chief Design Officer, and Gregory Guillaume, Kia Europe’s Chief Designer.

“A concept car like the POP could only have come from us,” explains Gregory Guillaume. “Designers very rarely have the opportunity to start from a clean sheet of paper and it’s great to be in a position to operate with such freedom.”

In addition to POP, Kia will also be displaying a number of striking production models which reinforce the company’s commitment to developing its design language – and putting this into practice with real-world models.

Chief among these will be an all-new D-segment contender called Kia Optima. The new model will make its European debut at the Paris Motor Show before going on sale in select European countries this year. Sales in Western Europe will commence in 2011.

Embodying what Peter Schreyer calls “a bold, athletic and visual sporting energy”, which is carried through from the exterior to the car’s involving driving dynamics, Kia Optima is expected to significantly grow Kia’s market share in the D-segment.

The stylish sedan is longer, lower, wider and has a longer wheelbase than any previous D-segment offering from Kia. It will be available in Europe with a host of high-technology features and with a choice of either a new ‘U2’ 1.7-litre VGT diesel engine (136 ps*) or an all-new technically-advanced ‘Nu’ 2.0-litre CVVL (continuously variable valve lift) gasoline engine (170 ps*).

The second of Kia’s design-led production models at Paris will be the stunning new Kia Sportage compact SUV, which has received praise from media and public alike since launch. New Sportage will soon be available with two additional engine options – both smaller capacity, fitted with fuel-stretching technology and mated exclusively to 2WD drivetrains and six-speed manual transmissions – to offer even greater efficiency.

Demonstrating Kia’s ongoing commitment to minimising its vehicles’ impact on the environment, the manufacturer’s Paris stand will also feature a number of ‘green’ models. The three environmentally-focused vehicles – Kia cee’d and Venga low emissions models, and an innovative mild hybrid Kia Sportage concept – have an average tailpipe CO2 figure of just 108 g/km and will be displayed in a distinct ‘green zone’ on the stand.

The Kia Motors stand is located in Hall 5.2, and the press conference, including the official unveiling of the new POP concept by Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, will take place at 16.30 CET.

Kia unveils seven advanced automotive technologies at 2010 CES

(Seoul) January 8, 2010 – Kia Motors returns to the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which opens today (7 January), to showcase seven new and advanced infotainment technologies, including the all-new ‘UVO’ system co-developed with Microsoft that will appear in future Kia vehicles.

The all-new UVO (short for ‘Your Voice’) system is the world’s most advanced in-car multimedia technology. It features a new level of voice recognition through full Microsoft® intelligent speech engine technology, combined with Windows Embedded Auto software, to provide voice- and hand-activated experiences for simple management of music files and hands-free communications.

“Since forming a long-term partnership with Microsoft in 2008, Kia has moved forward rapidly with its in-house development of new and innovative solutions to deliver next generation in-car infotainment systems,” commented Mr. Hyoung-Keun Lee, President, Kia Motors Corporation.

“Kia is investing in a five-year IT and technology advancement program to provide drivers and passengers with safe and easy-to-use personalized in-vehicle communications and entertainment and to offer consumers an experience that will give our cars a clear competitive advantage,” concluded Mr. Lee.

In addition to the ‘UVO powered by Microsoft®’ system which debuts at the 2010 CES, Kia Motors is revealing six new in-vehicle technologies.

Innovative ‘touch-sensitive’ control panel
In future Kia vehicles, the all-new UVO system will be offered with an innovative touch-sensitive control panel. Advantages over normal buttons include improved response time ensuring sharper and faster reactions to user inputs and enhanced durability with fewer parts.

Looking forward, the use of touch panels with Field Effect ASIC (inner and outer electrodes triggered by finger contact) will enable Kia engineers and designers to take bold steps in rethinking the interior design of Kia models.

World’s first ‘haptic’ steering wheel controls
Kia is showcasing the world’s first ‘haptic’ control module built into a car’s steering wheel. Touch-sensitive, the haptic control is positioned for easy operation by the driver’s thumb and generates reactive feedback vibrations. It features seven modes to control all elements of the vehicle’s audio system.

Drivers will quickly learn to monitor the car’s systems through touch alone, allowing them to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road – improving road safety.

Better connectivity with full Telematics service
Kia’s all-new full Telematics service operates through the car’s built-in audio system via hands-free Bluetooth® technology to facilitate better connectivity. Rapid and seamless transfer of information to the vehicle occupants is ensured by the high-speed Telematics service’s 40 bytes-per-second transfer speed (830 bytes-per-second of raw data).

The new system will also provide automatic emergency service calls (in the event of an accident where airbags are activated), navigation and vehicle diagnostics service.

First opportunity to watch ‘live’ digital TV in an automobile
Kia’s new breakthrough TV technology will enable live digital television channels to be watched on in-car entertainment systems for the first time. Uninterrupted TV reception is possible at speeds up to 180 mph, delivering dual-band television transmissions with clear, high-quality broadcasts that entertain and inform rear seat occupants.

The television signal runs through the car’s audio system, allowing a wide variety of content to be viewed and occupants to be alerted to breaking new stories in a visually-rich format.

‘Widget’ framework for a wireless communications hub
The main customer benefit of Kia’s new widget system is allowing users easier access to key services by reducing the number of steps involved in accessing them via their car’s terminal screen – both while stationary and in motion.

Developed in partnership with industry leader Ubivelox, Kia’s widget can receive RSS news and financial feeds, immediate traffic and weather reports and updates from networking SNS applications such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Active Antennas with two world ‘first’ technologies
Working together with Korean-based Ace-Antenna, Kia has developed two innovative multi-use, high performance antennas that promise to be far more cost-effective to install, operate and maintain.

The ‘Unity External Shark Fin Antenna’ is the world’s first nine-band system that reads a variety of signals, including CDMA and GPS, while incorporating a conventional analog radio aerial. Another world ‘first’, the ‘Unity Internal Mirror Antenna’ features six bands and is incorporated into the rear-view mirror housing. Designed for Telematics and ITS reception, it also supports CDMA and GPS signals.

The 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center runs from 7-10 January. Kia’s stand (#1822), which is located in the North Hall, In-Vehicle Technology Zone, features a UVO-equipped Kia Sorento, a Kia Forte Koup and six new technology displays.

UVO-equipped Kia Sorento and Kia Soul models are also being displayed on the Microsoft ABU (Automotive Business Unit) stand at CES.
